Netherlands Invests €200 Million in New AI Factory to Secure Digital Independence

The Hague, Netherlands – June 27, 2025 – The Netherlands is making a significant push to become a leader in artificial intelligence with a planned €200 million investment in a new “AI Factory.” The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, aims to bolster the nation’s digital independence and economic competitiveness in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The project will receive €60 million from the Nij begun Fund, established to revitalize the economies of groningen and northern Drenthe following earthquake damage. An additional €70 million is being sought through European co-financing, bringing the total potential investment to €200 million. Officials anticipate the AI Factory will be operational next year.

Minister Karremans emphasized the urgency of the project, stating the AI Factory is “not a luxury but pure necessity.” He warned that failing to develop domestic AI capabilities would leave the Netherlands reliant on foreign technology and vulnerable to economic shifts. “AI is going to fundamentally change our economy and society. But those who do not develop the technology themselves depend on others. That is why we are fully committed to a strong, dutch AI infrastructure,” Karremans wrote in a letter to the Lower House.

The AI Factory will house a supercomputer boasting immense computing power, slated for use in 2027. This infrastructure will be crucial for the advancement and testing of AI applications across diverse sectors.

this investment positions the Netherlands alongside other European nations vying for a share of the EU’s InvestAI program, which aims to unlock up to €200 billion in AI infrastructure investment across the continent [[3]]. The move also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen innovation and autonomy in the Northern Netherlands [[1]] and explore the utility of AI factories within the Dutch system [[2]].
