Barcelona, Spain – A new humanitarian aid flotilla departed Barcelona today, aiming to deliver critical supplies to the Gaza Strip, where the United Nations recently declared a state of famine. The initiative, dubbed the Global Sumud Flotilla – “Sumud” meaning “perseverance” in Arabic – includes prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg among its participants.
This mission arrives amid a devastating war and ongoing restrictions on aid access to Gaza, impacting its 2.3 million residents. The flotilla’s attempt to reach Gaza follows a previous, unsuccessful effort in June, when the sailboat Mased, carrying activists from multiple nations, was intercepted by Israeli forces approximately 185 kilometers off the Gaza coast. all passengers were afterward expelled.The UN has reported that roughly 500,000 people in Gaza are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
Organizers describe the Global Sumud Flotilla as an independent effort, unaffiliated with any government or political party. The group intends to circumvent existing limitations on aid delivery via customary channels, bringing direct assistance to a population in dire need. The initiative’s success hinges on navigating complex geopolitical challenges and potential interception by Israeli authorities.
