Green Fireball Streaks Across US Skies: PNW, California & More
A bright green fireball streaked across the skies of the Pacific Northwest early Monday morning, prompting reports from residents in Oregon, Washington, and beyond. The phenomenon, observed around 6:06 a.m. Local time, was visible as far south as Eugene, Oregon, and as far north as Kalama, Washington, according to reports received by FOX 12 Oregon.
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) identified the object as a bright meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere at a height of approximately 60 to 80 miles. The distinctive green hue, OMSI explained, is commonly caused by the presence of magnesium which burns as it heats up and vaporizes during atmospheric entry.
Reports originated from a wide geographic area, including Boring and Portland, Oregon, and extended into Washington state. Residents shared videos and photos of the event via social media and directly to local news outlets like FOX 12, and KPTV.
KPTV reported receiving numerous eyewitness accounts, while KOIN.com noted the widespread nature of the sightings across the region. The event too garnered attention from Oregon Live, which reported on the public’s reaction to the unusual celestial display.
No further details regarding the meteor’s trajectory or potential impact points have been released by OMSI or other scientific organizations as of Tuesday morning.
