GREEN BAY,Wis. - The Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday, fueled by multiple career-high performances and a dominant offensive showing. The win marks the opening weekend finale of Horizon League play for Green Bay.
Green Bay overcame a tight first set, ultimately winning 26-24, and then controlled the momentum with decisive 25-20 victories in both the second and third sets. The fourth set proved to be the most competitive, requiring extra points before the phoenix closed it out 27-25. The team’s performance signals a strong start to thier Horizon League campaign and builds anticipation for upcoming rivalry matchups.
The Phoenix offense was led by strong performances from several key players. Green Bay recorded 58 kills on a .219 hitting percentage, compared to Youngstown State’s 46 kills and .172 hitting percentage. Pichelman and Neumann where instrumental in the second set, while Koning and Pichelman delivered crucial kills to seal the fourth.
green Bay’s third set proved to be their most efficient, boasting a.324 hitting percentage with 16 kills.The team also recorded 6 aces to Youngstown State’s 5, and out-dug the Penguins 69-60.Despite being outblocked 9-6, Green Bay’s consistent offensive pressure proved too much for youngstown State to handle.
The Phoenix will continue their Horizon League schedule with a rematch against Youngstown State tomorrow at 1 p.m. Following that, Green Bay will travel to face in-state rival Milwaukee on Tuesday, sept. 30th at 6 p.m.
