Byzantine Museum Showcases Historic Greek medals in “Phoenix” Exhibit
ATHENS, Greece – A new exhibition, “Phoenix,” opened at the byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens, presenting a rare collection of silver and copper dies and medals relating to Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state of autonomous Greece.The exhibit features commemorative and anniversary medals honoring Kapodistrias, alongside sculptural works like the “medal of Rebirth” and depictions of the “Wreath of Victory.”
The exhibition offers a compelling glimpse into a pivotal period of Greek nation-building, highlighting the artistic and symbolic efforts to establish a new national identity following the Greek War of Independence. displayed are dies from Aegina, dating between 1828 and 1831, alongside medals celebrating Kapodistrias’s governance. The collection underscores the importance of commemorative art in shaping collective memory and solidifying the foundations of the modern Greek state. The exhibit is currently open to the public.
