Google recently hosted a group of Seniorweb Schweiz members at its Zurich headquarters to showcase its latest accessibility technologies. The visit, reported by Seniorweb, highlighted tools designed to simplify interactions with computers, mobile phones, and other devices for older adults.
Seniorweb Schweiz, established in 1998, operates as a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the 50+ generation in Switzerland. The platform, supported by the Pro Seniorweb foundation, aims to bridge the digital divide and foster a sense of community among seniors. It began as a website intended to introduce older generations to the internet and strengthen their digital skills.
The organization offers a variety of resources, including a website with daily articles, columns, and interviews covering a wide range of topics – from societal issues and culture to lifestyle and current events. Seniorweb also distributes a weekly newsletter, seniornews, and publishes a quarterly print magazine, seniorin, which delves into themes such as mobility, housing, health, and preventative care. These cross-media channels allow users to engage with content through various formats and contribute their own comments and perspectives.
Beyond information dissemination, Seniorweb provides practical support through its “seniornlearn” learning center, offering courses and individual assistance with digital technologies. This initiative is staffed by volunteers and aims to assist seniors stay current with technological advancements. The organization was initially funded by Migros-Kulturprozent and Pro Senectute, and later transitioned to a foundation model in 2008, with the Seniorweb AG operating as its subsidiary.
Arthur von Arx, a former member of the EURAG General Council, played a key role in the early stages of Seniorweb’s development, leveraging his network to explore opportunities for connecting seniors across Europe. The platform is currently chaired by Anton Schaller. Seniorweb Schweiz distinguishes itself as a unique, focused offering within the Swiss media landscape, providing a dedicated space for the 50+ demographic to connect, learn, and share information.
Seniorweb also offers daily Sudoku and crossword puzzles for mental stimulation, and a support team to assist with various digital issues, including PC, laptop, mobile phone, and internet-related problems.
