Government Trump Calls for End of Filibuster
WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump on Sunday renewed calls for Senate rule changes to end a potential government shutdown, asserting it will conclude only when Democrats concede to Republican demands. the comments follow previous appeals for Republicans to utilize the “Nuclear option” to bypass Democratic opposition and reopen the government.
“TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, NOT JUST FOR THE SHUTDOWN, BUT FOR EVERYTHING ELSE,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
The former president’s push for altering the Senate’s procedures, which require 60 votes to advance most legislation, mirrors sentiments from some within the Republican party. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of georgia is among those urging Senate Republicans to modify the rules to resolve the shutdown impasse. Though, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has publicly supported maintaining the filibuster, with a spokesperson confirming his position on Friday.
Trump addressed thune’s stance during a recent interview on “60 Minutes,” stating, “I like John Thune. I think he’s terrific, but I disagree with him on this point.”
“The Republicans have to get tougher,” Trump continued. “If we end the filibuster, we can do exactly what we want.”
He further argued that eliminating the filibuster would allow for the swift passage of Republican priorities, stating, “WE WILL GET ALL OF OUR COMMON SENSE POLICIES APPROVED (VOTER ID, ANYONE?) AND MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump also warned that Democrats would abolish the filibuster if given the opportunity.
“REMEMBER, THE DEMOCRATS WILL DO IT IMMEDIATELY, AS SOON AS THEY GET THE CHANCE,” Trump said. “OUR DOING IT WILL NOT GIVE THEM THE CHANCE. REPUBLICANS, BE TOUGH AND SMART!”
