Governor Mills Condemns Federal immigration enforcement in Maine

PORTLAND — Gov. Janet Mills strongly criticized the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations in Maine on Thursday, characterizing federal officers as “secret police.”

Lack of Transparency and concerns Over Arrests

During a news conference at Portland City Hall, Mills expressed frustration over the lack of facts provided by federal officials regarding “Operation Catch of the Day,” launched by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on tuesday. Her office has received no data on the number of arrests made in Maine.

Federal officials state the operation targets approximately 1,400 individuals in the state.However, mills questioned the claim that arrests are limited to those with criminal records.

“we’ve reached out. We’ve asked questions,” Mills stated. “We have not received any answers. We have not received any data. And frankly, it’s unacceptable.”

Denouncing Federal Tactics

Mills’s strong language reflects growing concerns about the tactics employed by federal immigration enforcement. She specifically objected to the lack of communication and transparency surrounding the operation.

“These are people who are living in our communities, working in our communities, raising families in our communities,” Mills said. “And to have them snatched up by what appears to be secret police, without any notice to the state, is simply unacceptable.”

Maine’s Stance on Immigration

Maine has historically taken a more welcoming stance toward immigrants than some other states. Mills has consistently advocated for policies that support immigrant communities and promote integration.
