GOP Blocks Funding Bill Over ICE Dispute & Trump Deportation Policy
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday he will order Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to assist with airport security operations as soon as Monday, escalating a standoff with Democrats over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The move, revealed in a post on Truth Social, is a direct response to Democrats’ refusal to approve a latest DHS budget without provisions to limit ICE’s enforcement activities and address concerns over civil rights violations. According to Trump, ICE agents will be deployed to airports to provide security “like no one has ever seen before” if an agreement isn’t reached “immediately.”
On Sunday, Trump reiterated his threat, stating that the deployments would begin the following day. He accused Democrats of prioritizing “hard line criminals” who have entered the country illegally and endangering national security by withholding funds previously agreed upon.
The current partial government shutdown has left most of DHS without full funding. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents have been working without pay since February 14, and the potential involvement of ICE agents raises questions about training and expertise. ICE personnel lack specific training in the airport security protocols overseen by the TSA, according to reports.
Trump specified that deployed ICE agents would focus on the “immediate arrest of all Illegal Immigrants” entering the country, with a particular emphasis on individuals from Somalia. This statement has drawn scrutiny, as the vast majority of Somali immigrants in the U.S. Are legal residents or citizens.
Democrats in Congress are demanding that any DHS funding bill include measures to curb abuses committed by ICE, including prohibitions on certain enforcement tactics. The impasse reflects a broader disagreement over immigration policy and the scope of ICE’s authority.
The White House has not yet specified which airports will be affected by the potential deployment of ICE agents, nor has it detailed the logistical arrangements for such an operation. DHS officials have remained silent on the matter, and it remains unclear how the agency will coordinate with TSA if ICE agents are deployed.
