Google Drive: New Auto-Backup for Downloaded Files on Android

February 17, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Google has begun rolling out a new feature for Android devices that automatically backs up locally stored documents to Google Drive. The update, delivered via Google Play Services (version 26.06), introduces the “local file backup” functionality, offering users a new layer of data security and accessibility, according to Google’s system updates released today.

The feature is designed to automatically save downloaded documents, ensuring they are available across a user’s devices. Even as details regarding user control over the backup process remain limited, the update notes suggest the system is intended to function autonomously. Google has not yet specified how users will be able to enable or disable the feature, or whether options for selective backup will be available.

This new functionality appears distinct from existing Android backup and restore features used during device transfers or factory resets, focusing specifically on safeguarding downloaded files. News of the update follows recent improvements to Android setup processes, aiming to streamline the user experience, as reported by TechRepublic. The February 2026 Google System Updates also include a range of other enhancements, though Google has not yet detailed all changes.

The rollout of local file backup via Google Drive is currently underway, and Google is expected to provide further information regarding customization options in the coming weeks. The absence of immediate control settings has prompted questions about data management preferences among users, as automatic uploads to cloud storage may not align with everyone’s privacy or storage considerations.
