Chicago, IL – October 4, 2024 – Theatre fans and costume enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Chicago theatrical history this Saturday, October 11, as the Goodman Theatre hosts a costume shop sale. The event, offering items from over six decades of productions, hasn’t been held as 2018.
The sale will feature a wide array of clothing, accessories, jewelry, footwear, and props priced from 50¢ to $300. Notable items include the striped suit from the 1964 production of An Italian Straw Hat, a giant puppet from The Light in the Piazza (2004), and costumes from the 2024 productions of The Matchbox Magic Flute – including Emily Rohm’s black-and-red gown and Tiny Tim’s (Ava Rose Doty) jacket from A Christmas Carol.
Additional treasures include a child’s pumpkin costume, an American flag dress, and a corn dress-all with matching accessories-from The Music Man (2019), and also costumes from The Santaland Diaries (2018), The Little Foxes (2015), and Turn of the Century (2008). Pieces from A Little Night Music (1994), A Christmas Carol (2017-2019), A Winter’s Tale (2019), The Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci (2022), and the Penelopiad (2024) will also be available.
Many of the costumes were designed by Anna Kuzmanic,alongside contributions from Jenny Mannis,Heidi Sue McMath,Mara Blumenfeld,Donna Grenata,Rachel Lambert,and Catherine Zuber.
Founded in 1925 with a $250,000 donation from Mr. and Mrs.William O. Goodman, the Goodman Theatre is Chicago’s oldest theater company. Established as a tribute to their son, playwright Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, who died in the 1918 influenza epidemic, the theater initially operated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to its current facility at 170 N.Dearborn in 2000.
The costume sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (doors open at 9:30 a.m.). Credit/debit card payments only will be accepted, and all sales are final.
