Golden Globe Race Sailor Guy de Boer Requests Urgent Medical Evacuation in South Atlantic
Golden Globe Race competitor Guy de Boer requested an immediate medical evacuation from his yacht SPIRIT in the South Atlantic on 7 November 2026 after reporting a sudden deterioration in his condition following an onboard accident.
Skipper Reports Medical Emergency to Race Organizers
Shortly after 16:00 UTC, de Boer contacted race organizers directly via satellite telephone. He stated that he could no longer use his left arm, stand, maintain his balance, or eat.

In response, race officials advised him to activate his emergency position-indicating radio beacon, keep his satellite phone switched on, and place his grab bag nearby. Don McIntyre notified Brazil’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at 16:20 UTC and submitted an official situation report requesting urgent evacuation assistance.
Navy Vessel Steams Toward Moving Yacht for Rescue
The Brazilian Navy dispatched the corvette BARROSO (V-34) to steam at maximum speed toward the yacht, with plans to launch a helicopter and deploy two navy divers to recover the sailor. The estimated arrival of the naval vessel near the yacht was set for approximately 06:00 UTC.

However, the rescue operation encountered a logistical hurdle because SPIRIT remained underway. Organizers worked to establish communication with de Boer to instruct him to slow down or stop the vessel so the helicopter transfer could occur safely.
Cabin Accident Triggers Escalating Health Crisis
The emergency stems from an accident inside SPIRIT‘s cabin on 2 November 2026, when de Boer struck his head and potentially lost consciousness. He first reported the incident to Race Manager Georgie Vintner on 3 November. Vintner immediately directed him to contact medical support via MSOS.
Dr. Spike Briggs discussed the case with the Golden Globe Race team that morning and advised against continuing the race, recommending instead that de Boer sail downwind toward Punta del Este for medical evaluation. Although de Boer initially hoped to continue, his manager reported worsening balance issues by 5 November and stated an intention to steer toward Rio de Janeiro.
Family Intervention and Medical File Transfer
Family concerns prompted relatives to contact Brazil’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre late on 6 November, and they reached out to race organizers in the early hours of 7 November. GGR provided safety documentation, emergency equipment details, beacon codes, and photographs to the Brazilian authorities.
A Brazilian doctor subsequently spoke with Don McIntyre at 18:36 UTC, and de Boer’s medical file was transferred to the rescue coordination authorities at 18:54 UTC.
