Gmail Discontinuing External Mail Import: How to Save Your Emails

August 12, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Google is phasing out Gmailify and web-based POP message downloading, meaning millions of users who rely on Gmail as a central inbox for external accounts must update their settings before January 2027 to avoid missing incoming mail, according to reports from Centrum.cz and Mobify.cz.

For years, many people used Gmail as a universal inbox where messages from Outlook, Yahoo, and other external accounts flowed automatically. Google is now closing those pathways. According to Mobify.cz, the changes will not affect Gmail as a whole, and users will retain all messages currently stored in their inboxes. However, the discontinuation targets two specific features that allowed Gmail to continuously ingest mail from external accounts: Gmailify and web-based POP retrieval.

What Google is Removing and the January 2027 Deadline

The shutdown impacts two distinct features that are frequently confused, as reported by Mobify.cz. Gmailify acted as an overlay that equipped external accounts—typically Yahoo, Outlook, or AOL—with Gmail features such as spam filtering, primary inbox categorization, advanced search operators, and enhanced mobile notifications. Conversely, the “Check mail from other accounts” feature via POP operated differently by periodically downloading copies of new messages from an external inbox straight into the main Gmail interface without supplementary categorization or spam protection.

New users lost access to both capabilities following the first quarter of 2026. For existing users, the features will continue to operate until January 2027, though Google’s official documentation does not specify an exact termination day, according to Mobify.cz.

How to Check Your Account Settings

Users can determine if the upcoming changes affect them by checking their configuration on a computer. According to Mobify.cz, opening Gmail, selecting the gear icon in the top right corner, choosing “See all settings,” and navigating to the “Accounts and Import” tab reveals the relevant section. In the “Check mail from other accounts” area, the presence of any external email address indicates that the account is affected. An accompanying “Gmailify” label signifies that the user also utilizes the service’s overlay capabilities. If the section is empty, the transition requires no action.

The highest risk applies to individuals who configured Gmail years ago as a collection inbox for an older Seznam address, a custom domain, or a corporate Outlook account. These integrations have operated quietly in the background for years before facing termination.

Approved Workarounds and Replacement Options

To prevent incoming messages from stopping after the shutdown, Google outlines two official alternatives, each offering distinct advantages according to Mobify.cz.

The first option involves setting up automatic forwarding directly with the original email provider. Users log into their legacy inbox, such as Outlook or Yahoo, and enable forwarding to their Gmail address so that new messages arrive directly. For Outlook.com, the process requires navigating to Settings, Mail, Forwarding, entering the Gmail address, and saving the configuration. Google recommends subsequently adding the external address to Gmail’s “Send mail as” function to prevent forwarded messages from being misidentified as spam or phishing. The “Send mail as” feature remains active.

The second option adds the external account to the mobile Gmail application as an independent IMAP account. This method synchronizes changes across devices and permits a unified “All Inboxes” view, although the external account remains separate and does not receive Gmail’s spam filtering or categorization features. IMAP connection is officially supported for Czech users with Email.cz addresses hosted by Seznam, while automatic forwarding for free Seznam accounts must be verified directly within individual account settings or through support.

Previously synchronized emails will remain in Gmail after the transition, and one-off imports of legacy mail and contacts via the web will remain available.
