GLP-1s & CAR T-cell Therapy: Latest in Rheumatology – Healio Coverage

March 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The expanding use of GLP-1 receptor agonists is rapidly becoming a significant topic across multiple medical specialties, according to Leonard H. Calabrese, DO, chief medical editor of Healio Rheumatology. Calabrese highlighted the trend in a recent Healio video exclusive, describing it as “the story of the moment, and not only of rheumatology but the world.”

The growing interest in GLP-1 agonists stems from ongoing research into their immunologic effects and potential applications beyond their initial use in treating diabetes. Calabrese noted that the field is “elucidating and trying to capitalize on the immunologic effects of this family of drugs and related compounds,” suggesting a period of rapid development and discovery.

Alongside the focus on GLP-1 agonists, rheumatologists are as well showing increasing interest in CAR T-cell therapy as a potential treatment for rheumatic diseases. A recent survey conducted by Spherix Global Insights revealed that 51% of rheumatologists hold a “very favorable” view of the data released so far regarding CAR T-cell therapy, while an additional 47% are “somewhat favorable.”

Despite the enthusiasm, a significant portion of rheumatologists – nearly 70% – remain hesitant about the widespread adoption of CAR T-cell therapy, citing concerns about whether its efficacy outweighs the potential risks. Survey respondents expressed both optimism and caution, with some describing the therapy as potentially “transformative” and even “revolutionary” for severe, treatment-resistant autoimmune diseases.

Calabrese emphasized the dynamic nature of the field, stating, “This represents a very interesting analysis of polling from over 100 rheumatologists nationally, gauging the enthusiasm and reservations that they have about this moving into practice.” He added that while the outcomes of CAR T-cell therapy have exceeded expectations and toxicities have been minimal, challenges related to cost, availability, and complexity remain.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) issued a daily alert on March 24, 2026, announcing the upcoming 2026 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, scheduled for April 16–19, 2026, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. The alert also detailed ongoing legal battles, including a case where the NRA defeated a California gun control law and was awarded nearly $500,000 in attorney fees. The NRA-ILA addressed recent lawsuits against Glock and criticized a Commonwealth Attorney in Norfolk, Virginia, for attributing a terrorist attack to supporters of the Second Amendment.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced the resumption of international mail service, effective March 20, 2026, according to an industry alert issued on March 19, 2026. The USPS also detailed upcoming system maintenance and updates, including a Cust Reg Maintenance scheduled for April 18, 2026, and API system maintenance on March 25, 2026.
