Global Vote to End Leap Seconds to Prevent Infrastructure Chaos

International timekeepers are preparing to vote on a draft resolution next month at the General Conference on Weights and Measures that would make Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) continuous from May 20, 2027, effectively ending the decades-old practice of adding leap seconds. The proposal addresses growing technical anxieties surrounding Earth’s slightly accelerated rotational speed and the unprecedented threat of a negative leap second.

Shemar elaborated that removing a second might provoke widespread and intense instability throughout vital national systems, such as satellite navigation networks, electrical grids, and telecommunications.

To eliminate this systemic risk, the upcoming General Conference on Weights and Measures draft resolution proposes letting UTC diverge from rotational time by as much as an hour. Shemar noted that this resolution is likely to pass due to majority support from national delegates eager to protect national infrastructure from timing-induced risks. Under this new continuous model, UTC would not diverge by a full hour for at least a thousand years.
