The Global Sumud flotilla, carrying aid to‌ Gaza, reported confrontations with what organizers described ⁣as “Israeli military ‌ships” off‌ the coast of Egypt on Wednesday. ‌The flotilla, which departed Spain in early September, consists ⁢of ‌approximately 45 boats carrying ‌hundreds of ‍pro-Palestinian activists and humanitarian aid – including infant milk, food, and medical supplies – from over 40 countries.

According to a press release published⁢ on X (formerly Twitter), “naval‍ forces of the Israeli occupation launched an intimidation operation” early Wednesday‌ morning. The ‌main ship, Alma, was “aggressively surrounded by an ⁤Israeli warship for several ‌minutes,” resulting in ‍disabled communications and a maneuver to avoid⁢ collision, ‍organizers stated. The ship Sirius also experienced similar ⁢”harassment maneuvers.”

French deputy Marie Mesmeur, of the La France Insoumise‍ party, aboard the Sirius, ‌told the France-presse agency (AFP) she observed at least two unidentified ships, one “very, very⁤ close,” and a⁢ “military ‍intervention boat with enormous light pointed at us.” ‌She ⁤reported that radar and internet communications were cut during the incident.

The flotilla, named Sumud – meaning‌ “perseverance”⁤ in ⁤Arabic – stated it would “continue your ⁢journey without being discouraged‌ by the threats and tactics of Israeli intimidation,” acknowledging it was entering an area where previous flotillas had been intercepted or attacked, referencing the June and July interceptions of sailboats Mased ⁢ and ⁢ To Give Up.

As of ⁤7:30 am Paris time, the flotilla was ‌located⁤ in ‌the Mediterranean north of the Egyptian coast, approximately 120 nautical miles (220 kilometers) from the ⁢Palestinian territory.
