“After much soul-searching, I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” Knight wrote on Instagram. She added that she intends to spend more time on projects with her husband and visit with her grandchildren as she embraces a new chapter.
Reflecting on her longevity in the public eye, Knight thanked her supporters for carrying what she described as a “little girl’s dream” across an extraordinary 75-year journey. “I am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you,” she wrote. “I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road. God bless all of you and hope to see you soon.”
The announcement arrives midway through a scheduled 2026 tour. It also follows the conclusion of The Queens Tour, a major collaborative run in 2025 that featured Knight alongside fellow music icons Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills.
The rigorous physical demands of that 2025 touring schedule previously drew public concern from her son, Shanga Hankerson.
Hankerson detailed encounters with members of his mother’s inner circle during the 2025 performances, highlighting visible strain behind the scenes. He described a emotional meeting with Knight’s longtime road manager, Larry Ward. “I went, and I hugged him, and we hugged, and he looked at me, and he’s like, ‘I’m so glad to see you.’ He said, ‘Shanga, it’s been so hard,’” Hankerson recalled of the exchange with Ward.
Hankerson also pointed to onstage moments during the run, asserting that the intense pace affected performances. “The band played about two or three extra bars, and she zoned out. The background singers started singing, and that brought her back,” he stated, adding that crew members had to rewind teleprompters because his mother was missing cues.
