Gisèle Pelicot: Rape, Trauma & The Cost of Public Courage

February 17, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

PARIS – Gisèle Pelicot’s memoir, “A Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides,” was released Tuesday in 22 languages, detailing years of abuse and the subsequent public rape trial of her husband, Dominique Pelicot, and 50 other men. The book’s publication marks the latest chapter in a case that ignited a feminist movement in France and continues to reverberate through the country’s legal and social structures.

Pelicot, now 73, recounts discovering that her then-husband repeatedly drugged her over several years and invited dozens of men to their home to sexually assault her, documenting the ordeal in nearly 250 pages co-written with Judith Perrignon. The crimes, which began to surface in 2021, unfolded against the backdrop of France’s #MeToo movement, known as #BalanceTonPorc – “expose your pig” – and a national reckoning with issues of incest and abuse.

The case took an unprecedented turn when Pelicot chose to hold the trial in public in 2024, foregoing her legal right to anonymity in sexual assault cases. This decision transformed her into a figurehead for feminist activism, drawing international attention to the proceedings. According to reports, the initial discovery of the abuse came after a police investigation into Dominique Pelicot for filming women’s skirts with a cellphone in a supermarket. During questioning, authorities revealed the extent of the abuse to Pelicot.

“I didn’t believe it was me in the photos,” Pelicot recalled in an interview, describing her reaction to the evidence presented by police. She described the images as depicting a “rag doll,” unable to recognize herself in the photographs documenting the assaults. Fifty-three men were ultimately convicted in connection with the crimes, with Dominique Pelicot receiving a 20-year prison sentence.

While the convictions were lauded as a victory for justice and a testament to Pelicot’s courage, the fallout from the case has been deeply personal. A recent report in The Modern Yorker details the strain the public exposure has placed on Pelicot’s family, with her children struggling to reconcile her newfound role as a feminist icon with their existing relationship with their father. The report recounts a conversation Pelicot had with police in October 2020, where she initially downplayed her husband’s behavior, expressing a desire to resolve the situation privately and believing he was “not like him.”

The memoir’s release comes as France continues to grapple with the complexities of sexual violence and the challenges of achieving justice for survivors. The case has prompted renewed debate about the role of shame and secrecy in perpetuating abuse, and the importance of empowering victims to come forward. The Washington Post reported the memoir is intended to send a message of hope and support to victims of sexual assault.

The New York Times reported that Pelicot’s decision to go public has inspired other women to report abuse, but also highlighted the difficulties they face in navigating the legal system and overcoming societal stigma. The memoir is available in bookstores and online, translated into English by Natasha Lehrer and Ruth Diver, and published by Penguin Press.
