Jakarta – Vice president Gibran Rakabuming Raka engaged in discussions with representatives from the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) and the Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI) regarding strategies for preventing and addressing intolerance within the nation. The meeting focused on collaborative efforts to foster unity and tolerance across Indonesian society.
Pastor Jacky Manuputty, Chairperson of PGI, stated following the meeting that intolerance remains a meaningful concern. He emphasized the crucial need for all stakeholders to actively promote tolerance and national unity. “We addressed the issue of intolerance and several recent incidents,” Manuputty explained. “There is a shared understanding that maintaining national unity is paramount, and instances of intolerance must be addressed effectively through both legal and legislative measures.”
The conversation also highlighted the importance of strengthening the roles of religious organizations and faith-based youth groups in preventing the spread of intolerance at the community level. Participants discussed the value of cultural engagement as a means of building bridges and fostering understanding.
“Each entity has a distinct role to play,” Manuputty noted. “The government is responsible for establishing and enforcing laws and legislation, while religious and cultural institutions must prioritize harmony and provide support to those affected by intolerance.”
