GI Doctor Reveals: Normal Poop Schedule, Toilet Habits & Red Flags

March 23, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

How often you go to the bathroom, and how long you spend there, can be indicators of underlying health concerns, according to a Harvard Medical School gastroenterologist. Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a professor of Medicine at Harvard and attending physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, discussed common bathroom habits and potential red flags on “The Checkup” podcast with Dr. Mike Varshavski.

While individual routines vary, Dr. Pasricha indicated a normal bowel movement frequency can range from once a day to three times a day, or as infrequently as once every three days. This range is largely influenced by dietary fiber intake, hydration levels, and exercise habits.

However, the amount of time spent on the toilet is also a crucial factor. Dr. Pasricha warned that exceeding five minutes can increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids, caused by straining and prolonged pressure on veins in the rectal area. She cautioned against extended toilet sessions fueled by distractions like social media, noting that losing sensation in the legs, or experiencing pins and needles, is a clear sign of sitting for too long.

The discussion also addressed the popularity of gut health trends promoted online, particularly on platforms like TikTok. While acknowledging that some remedies, such as massage and probiotics, may offer benefits to some individuals, Dr. Pasricha emphasized the importance of relying on scientifically-backed treatments. She also noted a concern with doctors promoting and selling supplements directly to patients.

Dr. Pasricha highlighted fiber as a foundational element of good gut health, but stressed the importance of gradual implementation. A sudden increase in fiber intake can lead to discomfort, including gas and bloating. She recommended incorporating fiber-rich foods like fruits, raw vegetables, and whole-grain cereals into the diet, alongside adequate water consumption.

Observing the appearance of stool is also recommended. Dr. Pasricha suggested that well-formed stool should ideally resemble a banana in shape, indicating optimal gut health.

The presence of blood on toilet paper, while sometimes attributable to minor issues like hemorrhoids, should not be ignored. Dr. Pasricha advised seeking medical evaluation for any instance of blood in the stool, as it can be a symptom of more serious conditions, including colon cancer. She noted a concerning trend of increasing colon cancer diagnoses in younger men, underscoring the importance of prompt investigation of unusual symptoms.

Dr. Pasricha’s perform focuses on the connection between the mind and gut, and she recently authored the book, “You’ve Been Pooping All Wrong.” She is a recipient of a Research Scholar Award from the American Gastroenterological Association for her research into gastrointestinal motility disorders.
