Ghost Recon Wildlands Last Rites Update: New Missions, 4K Visuals, and Free Content
As the summer schedule unfolds in August, Ubisoft has launched a massive free update for Ghost Recon Wildlands—widely regarded by players as the best entry in the series—while simultaneously opening player registration for the franchise’s unannounced next title through a new Insider Program.
The Last Rites Update and Current-Gen Enhancements
The free “Last Rites” update brings Ghost Recon Wildlands up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on current-gen consoles. According to Ubisoft’s official release details, players who already own the game do not need to repurchase it; the upgrades are automatically applied via a standard download. The update introduces a multi-objective mission arc featuring a mysterious new villain who adopts the alias of the local legend La Llorona. Additionally, PlayStation Plus subscribers can unlock exclusive cosmetic items inspired by this new adversary.
The update also marks the return of the classic 2017 Predator crossover mission. The limited-time event, which allowed players to hunt the iconic sci-fi creature, was originally delisted in 2020. Its return restores a piece of content that had been absent from the game for twice as long as it was originally playable. Alongside these additions, Ubisoft deployed hundreds of free cosmetic customization options, encompassing previously unreleased and gated content designed to give players more distinct visual choices.
Franchise Retrospective and Free Play Weekend Logistics
To celebrate the 25th-anniversary window for the broader series, Ubisoft structured a promotional campaign spanning multiple titles. Both Ghost Recon Wildlands and its 2019 sequel, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, entered a free-to-play weekend starting August 6, followed by steep platform discounts of up to 95% off. Separately, Ghost Recon Future Soldier was made available as a free claim on PC via Ubisoft Connect for a one-week promotional window.
While Wildlands continues to command critical favor, its successor faced commercial friction upon release. According to historical release context, Breakpoint frustrated portions of the player base with design choices like a gear-score system borrowed from Ubisoft’s The Division series.
The Ghost Recon Insider Program and Future Development
For players tracking the future of the intellectual property, Ubisoft confirmed that a brand-new Ghost Recon game is officially in development. The initiative invites the community to provide direct feedback to shape the upcoming sequel.
