Gerwyn Price and Nathan Aspinall Reach World Grand Prix Semi-Finals
Gerwyn Price survived match darts to defeat Jonny Clayton 3-2, while James Wade recorded a victory over Gian van Veen to reach the World Grand Prix semi-finals in Leicester, as reported by skysports.com.
Gerwyn Price Overcomes Match Darts Against Jonny Clayton
The all-Welsh quarter-final at the Mattioli Arena saw Price battle back from two sets down to level the match by winning six of the next seven legs. Clayton took out 110 and 117 before surviving set darts to sneak the opening set in a final leg, then captured the second in straight legs. Price responded in the third set with an 11-dart break and a 12-dart hold, averaging over 107 during that frame to breeze through the fourth set and force a decider. In the final set, Clayton missed a match dart to win in straight legs, and later wasted two more match-winning darts in the last-leg decider, allowing Price to snatch the victory. “I’m just glad I got over the winning line. I thought I was dead and buried, but I never gave up,” Price told Sky Sports.
James Wade Capitalizes on Gian van Veen in Straight Sets
Wade reflected on the contest by stating, “I was really fortunate Gian played like he did.”
Luke Humphries and Nathan Aspinall Advance in Leicester
Luke Humphries maintained his run without dropping a set by brushing aside Niels Zonneveld 3-0, following earlier straight-sets wins over Dave Chisnall and Jermaine Wattimena. Despite the comfortable scoreline, Humphries admitted to Sky Sports that he was disappointed with his execution, noting that it felt like he was the second-best player for the opening two sets. Aspinall advances to face Gerwyn Price in the semi-finals.
Tournament Context After Early Departures
The elimination of defending champion Luke Littler and six-time winner Michael van Gerwen earlier in the week opened the £150,000 tournament wide open. Niels Zonneveld reached the quarter-finals on his debut campaign in Leicester after beating Gary Anderson 3-1, though Zonneveld subsequently fell to Humphries. The remaining players continue their matches at the Mattioli Arena in a best-of-five-set format.
