Germany’s Club Scene Faces Extinction: Himmerich Disco Closes After 75 Years

March 23, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The Himmerich, a disco in Heinsberg, Germany, will close its doors in May after 75 years, marking the end of an era for the region’s nightlife. Marianne Limburg, the club’s owner, announced the closure in an emotional video posted online, visibly struggling to contain her tears. “We had a excellent time together,” she said, her voice breaking, adding that times have changed.

The Himmerich, known locally as Haus Waldesruh, has hosted over 25 million visitors since its opening in 1951, becoming a central hub for generations of revelers. The disco was “a place for unforgettable nights, encounters, first dates, friendships and very special memories,” according to Limburg’s statement.

The closure is part of a broader trend of disco closures across Germany. The number of discotheques nationwide has nearly halved in the last decade, falling from 2,042 in 2015 to 1,070 in 2024, according to data from the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) and the Federal Statistical Office. A survey by the LiveKomm association of music venues in 2024 revealed that more than half of clubs reported needing additional funding to remain operational.

Several factors are contributing to the decline. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered socializing habits, with many seeking alternative forms of entertainment during lockdowns. DJ Stinson, who performed at the Bochum club “Untergrund” for many years, suggested that younger generations are “learning to celebrate” differently.

The rise of streaming services like Spotify and dating apps like Tinder are also cited as contributing factors. These platforms offer alternatives to the traditional functions of discotheques – discovering new music and meeting people – without requiring a physical outing. Many young people now prefer socializing at home or attending festivals, according to reports.

Rising costs are also putting pressure on nightclubs. Expenses for personnel, energy, security, artist fees, and beverages have all increased, making it increasingly demanding to operate profitably.

The Himmerich is not the only venue facing closure. The “San Diego” in Simmerath closed in 2023 after over 40 years, and other clubs like “Starfish” in Aachen and “Pulp” in Duisburg have also shut down in recent years. The Bochum club “Untergrund” will close this month.

Despite the closure of the main nightclub, the Himmerich will continue to host its traditional Sunday dances on the first and third Sundays of each month. The venue will also remain available for private events, weddings, and corporate functions.

A petition has been launched online by fans of the Himmerich, arguing that the closure would “destroy a piece of our soul.” The petition describes the club as “more than a building – it is a living part of our lives, an anchor in the storm of everyday life.” As of Saturday afternoon, March 21, 2026, the petition had garnered over 500 signatures.
