Gerard Martín: Barcelona’s Unexpected Star & Aerial Duel Master

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Gerard Martín, a defender for FC Barcelona, has earned significant praise from manager Hansi Flick after a surprising rise to prominence within the first team. The 21-year-vintage, who wasn’t considered a key prospect just months ago, is now a regular starter in massive games, most recently featuring in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match against Newcastle United on March 18, 2026.

Martín’s journey to a consistent role began when Flick arrived at the club and identified a need for a left-back. Scouting reports from Barça Atlètic, coupled with input from Deco and Bojan Krkić, initially highlighted Martín as a potential solution in that position. However, his path took an unexpected turn.

“From the first day we saw that he enjoyed playing with the ball and that he had very good characteristics. He gave us a good impression and he stayed,” Flick stated, according to reports. An injury crisis in central defense created an opportunity for Martín, and he seized it, establishing himself alongside Pau Cubarsí in the heart of the Barcelona defense.

Flick has been particularly impressed with Martín’s composure and effectiveness, even in challenging match situations. “Gerard is an example that with mentality, effort and attitude, everything is possible. He is doing very well,” Flick said.

Data from DataMB reveals Martín is currently winning 98.4% of his aerial duels, a statistic that places him among elite defenders like Virgil van Dijk and Antonio Rüdiger. Beyond aerial ability, his passing accuracy and positional awareness have also been crucial to Flick’s tactical system. He has already accumulated over 2,200 minutes of playing time this season.

Martín recently contributed to a crucial goal in a match against Newcastle United, providing the assist for Marc Bernal’s finish from a Raphinha set piece. This assist marked a significant milestone, as it meant every outfield player on the Barcelona squad had now directly contributed to a goal this season. While Martín had seven goal contributions last season, his shift to central defense has altered the nature of his contributions.

“I’m not going to say much more. But without a doubt Gerard is an example that everything is possible if you perform. His performance is fantastic and we are delighted,” Flick added.
