State Sen. Elena Parent is calling for the arrest of a Georgia House attorney after obtaining text messages suggesting the lawyer attempted to influence a judge in a voting rights case. Parent alleges the attorney, Brian Pritchard, coordinated with a lawyer for the state to discuss strategy with Fulton County superior Court Judge Robert McBurney outside of court proceedings.
the controversy centers around a challenge to Georgia’s new election law, Senate Bill 202, brought by voting rights groups. Parent claims Pritchard’s actions represent a breach of judicial ethics and an attempt to improperly influence the outcome of the case. The senator presented the text messages during a Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, arguing they demonstrate a concerted effort to circumvent the legal process.
“Thes texts show a clear attempt to collude with the judge outside of the courtroom,” Parent stated. “This is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of our judicial system.”
Pritchard, who represents the Georgia house of Representatives in legal matters, has not yet publicly responded to the allegations. A spokesperson for the Georgia Attorney General’s office, which is also involved in the case, declined to comment.
the text messages, dated November 2022, appear to show Pritchard and a lawyer from the Attorney General’s office discussing potential arguments and strategies with Judge McBurney. While the content of the discussions is not fully revealed, Parent argues they demonstrate an inappropriate level of communication.Judge McBurney ultimately ruled against most of the plaintiffs’ claims in the SB 202 case, upholding key provisions of the law. Voting rights advocates have criticized the ruling, arguing it will disproportionately impact minority voters.
Parent’s call for Pritchard’s arrest is based on a Georgia law prohibiting attempts to influence a judge. She has requested that the Fulton County District Attorney investigate the matter. The incident raises broader questions about the impartiality of the georgia judiciary and the potential for political interference in election-related cases.
