George Ford Prioritizes England World Cup Bid, Rejects Lucrative South African Offer
MANCHESTER – George Ford has turned down a ample offer, reportedly worth R360 (approximately £19 million), from a South African club too remain with Sale Sharks and pursue a final opportunity to represent England at the upcoming Rugby World Cup. The decision underscores Ford’s commitment to competing for the fly-half position and contributing to Steve Borthwick’s squad.
ford, 30, recently returned to England from Leicester Tigers, joining Sale in June 2022. His form sence the move has been pivotal, culminating in a recall to the England squad for the 2023 Six Nations. He impressed during the summer tour of Australia, contributing to a series victory and earning praise for his leadership and tactical awareness.
The coaching staff’s additions during that tour resonated with Ford, influencing his decision. England head coach Steve Borthwick has secured Lee Blackett from Bath as a full-time addition and is attempting to finalize a job-share arrangement with Byron McGuigan from Sale ahead of the autumn Tests.
Ford highlighted the positive impact of Blackett’s arrival, stating, “He came in and added unbelievably well to our attack.He has got a very positive mindset, he wants us to be hazardous and go and score some tries.” He also acknowledged a developing synergy with McGuigan, noting their existing professional relationship.
Looking ahead, Ford believes england can refine their attacking strategy by blending structured play with the more improvisational style favored by teams like France. “The French teams are great at the unstructured side of it; the English DNA is more structured. If we can find a midpoint of that then we’ll be in a good spot,” he explained.
Despite contemplating a future in coaching – a path followed by his father Mike and brother Joe – ford remains focused on maximizing his playing career. He has recently incorporated pilates into his training regime, citing significant improvements in his hip, back, and kicking. ”I wish I’d have started it a bit earlier,” he admitted, recognizing the benefits of addressing previously overlooked areas of physical conditioning.
