Gene Simmons: Hip-Hop Doesn’t Belong in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Gene Simmons, co-founder of the iconic rock band KISS, has reaffirmed his controversial stance against the inclusion of hip-hop artists in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, arguing the genre falls outside the institution’s core focus. Simmons reiterated his position during a recent interview on the LegendsNLeaders podcast, sparking renewed debate about the Hall’s evolving definition of rock and roll.

Simmons’ comments stemmed from a discussion about the subjectivity of musical merit and the role of institutions in defining cultural relevance. He cited the induction of Grandmaster Flash alongside acts like Iron Maiden as evidence of a perceived disconnect between commercial success and Hall of Fame recognition. “The fact that, for instance, Iron Maiden is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when they can sell out stadiums, and Grandmaster Flash is,” he stated, according to reports of the interview.

The KISS bassist acknowledged a previous exchange with rapper Ice Cube on the topic, recalling Cube’s argument that hip-hop embodies the “spirit of rock n’ roll.” Simmons, however, remains unconvinced. “OK, fine … I just seek to know when Led Zeppelin’s gonna be in the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame,” he countered, emphasizing his belief that musical genres are defined by distinct approaches. He has previously expressed similar sentiments in print, asserting that hip-hop, along with genres like opera and classical music, does not belong within the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

KISS itself was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, a recognition Simmons has publicly criticized despite benefiting from it. Ice Cube was inducted in 2016 as a member of N.W.A., a group that pioneered gangsta rap and significantly impacted the cultural landscape. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has since inducted other prominent hip-hop artists, including Jay-Z, LL Cool J, and Missy Elliott, signaling a broadening of its scope.

Greg Harris, CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, defended the inclusion of hip-hop artists in a 2022 interview with Audacy following Eminem’s induction. Harris argued that hip-hop possesses the same raw energy and impactful messaging as rock and metal, describing it as a “chest punch with a message and with a power and with a rhythm and with a band.”

Ice Cube similarly articulated his perspective during N.W.A.’s 2016 induction ceremony, defining rock and roll not as a specific musical style but as a rebellious spirit that transcends genre boundaries. “Rock n’ roll is not an instrument,” he stated. “It’s not even a style of music. It’s a spirit that’s been going on since the blues, jazz, bebop, soul, rock n’ roll, R&B, heavy metal, punk rock and, yes, hip-hop.”

As of Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has not issued a public response to Simmons’ latest comments. The Songwriters Hall of Fame is set to honor both Simmons and fellow KISS founder Paul Stanley in 2026, recognizing their contributions to songwriting, according to a recent announcement from the organization.
