Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba Visits Gabon for 66th Independence Day Celebrations
Invited by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, Gen. Kainerugaba leads a high-level delegation to strengthen bilateral military collaboration and regional security ties between the two nations.
Military Reception in Libreville
Upon landing in Libreville, Gen. Kainerugaba was received by Gabon’s Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen. Brigitte Onkanowa, and the Chief of General Staff of the Gabonese Armed Forces, Gen. Jean-Bédel Bouka.
The Ugandan delegation includes key strategic figures: State Minister for Agriculture Desire Muhooza, Joint Staff–Political Commissariat Maj. Gen. Henry Masiko, and Joint Staff Training and Doctrine Brig. Gen. Wycliff Keita.
Gabon gained independence from French colonial rule in 1960. This anniversary serves as the backdrop for what is expected to be a series of bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the August 17 festivities.
The Architecture of the Uganda-Gabon Alliance
According to official records, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema first visited Uganda in August 2024. During that visit, he and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni negotiated cooperation in four primary sectors: trade, defence, tourism, and health.
President Nguema returned to Kampala in May 2026 specifically to attend the inauguration of President Museveni, cementing a rapport between the two heads of state.
Gen. Kainerugaba’s visit is expected to further deepen defence and security cooperation between Uganda and Gabon, with bilateral engagements on military collaboration and regional security expected to feature on the sidelines of the celebrations.
