Bob Geldof Confirms He Never Intended to Run for Irish President
Bob Geldof has clarified that he was never genuinely considering a bid for the Irish presidency, detailing a conversation with taoiseach Micheál Martin that confirmed the path forward for Fianna Fáil’s nomination. Reports linking the Boomtown Rats frontman to a potential run surfaced several weeks ago, prompting Mr. Martin to acknowledge a discussion with the Live Aid organizer regarding a possible candidacy.
According to Geldof, 73, the conversation with the Taoiseach was brief, as Mr.martin had already selected a preferred candidate. Last week, Fianna Fáil formally nominated former Dublin Gaelic football manager Jim Gavin as its candidate for October’s election.
Geldof revealed the initial speculation arose after being asked about a run following a performance at a festival in Ireland.”They ask that of everybody in Ireland, that’s the first thing – as anyone can (make a run), which is good,” he said. He admitted responding that he was looking for “something new, engaging and useful” after decades with the Boomtown Rats and Band Aid, which “set the hares running.”
Despite inquiries from influential figures, Geldof stated he “said ‘No’. Literally, I have no time.'” He agreed to speak with the Taoiseach at their request, and Mr. Martin reciprocated.”So Micheál called me and I said, ’What would you think about Bob Geldof being the candidate for the Fianna Fáil party?’ ‘I think it would be great,’ he said, ‘But I’ve already chosen someone.’ I said, ‘that’s the end of the conversation Taoiseach, thanks very much.’ And that was it.”
Geldof emphasized he hadn’t taken steps to qualify for the ballot – requiring support from 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities – and wouldn’t have had the time to do so. He also cited personal commitments, stating a seven-year term would mean sacrificing time with family and his musical pursuits. “I wouldn’t be able to play,” he explained.
The singer also expressed relief at the withdrawal of Conor McGregor from the presidential race. When asked about a future run, Geldof stated bluntly, ”I’ll be dead.”
