Communication Blackout as Israeli Ground Operation Intensifies in Gaza
As Israeli ground operations expand within Gaza, a widespread communication blackout has taken hold, cutting off internet and phone lines across the territory. The situation on the ground is described as challenging, with heavy fighting reported in multiple neighborhoods.
According to Israeli army spokesperson Shoshani, Israel is taking steps to minimize civilian casualties and facilitate humanitarian aid. Though, Shoshani alleges that Hamas is actively preventing civilians from evacuating to designated safe zones, utilizing them as human shields.
Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of the Hamas-run government media office, refutes these claims, stating that Israel’s assertions of safe areas in the south are untrue. He points to figures indicating that 44% of the 3,542 Palestinians killed by israeli strikes since the start of the current offensive on August 11th have died in central and southern Gaza. Al-Thawabta asserts this demonstrates “comprehensive and intentional targeting” of civilians and shelters.
Reports from the ground depict a mass exodus of civilians heading south along the coastal road, utilizing any available means of transport – carts, cars, vans – laden with possessions. Yasser Saleh, a displaced resident, described the desperate situation, stating they are “heading to go sleep on the streets towards the beach.”
Residents of Sheikh Radwan, north of Gaza City, report seeing Israeli tanks within their neighborhood and describe the detonation of driverless vehicles packed with explosives, resulting in widespread destruction. Similar reports of tank presence and explosions have emerged from Tel Al-Hawa, southeast of the city center.
The total Palestinian death toll in the conflict, which began with Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has surpassed 65,000, according to Gaza health authorities. Officials and rescue workers believe the actual number is likely higher due to the significant number of bodies trapped under rubble. The October 7th attacks resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages.
Despite extensive damage to Gaza City early in the war, approximately one million Palestinians have returned to their homes amongst the ruins, citing dire conditions in displacement areas.
