Gauteng Water Disruptions: Winter Maintenance and 19-Day Shutdown Loom
Rand Water and Eskom have announced a schedule of planned maintenance operations that will result in water outages across the Gauteng province.
The maintenance window is scheduled to run from May 29 to July 17. Within this period, 19 days of planned maintenance are expected to cause disruptions to the water supply for residents and businesses in the region.
Infrastructure Coordination
The outages are the result of coordinated winter maintenance between Eskom, the national power utility, and Rand Water, the bulk water provider. The operations are designed to address infrastructure requirements, but the process necessitates temporary shutdowns of water services in various affected areas.

Financial Constraints on Mitigation
The disruption is compounded by financial limitations regarding the provision of alternative water sources. Reports indicate that there are insufficient funds to deploy water tankers to support residents during the shutdown periods, leaving affected communities without the usual emergency relief measures provided during utility outages.
The maintenance window and subsequent outages are scheduled to begin on May 29.
