Gattuso urges Lazio players to ignore Serie A league table

Lazio sits alone at the top of the Italian Serie A table with 28 points following a sixth league victory, though coach Gennaro Gattuso insists his squad’s only real target remains reaching 40 points by the end of the season. detikSport reported that the club secured the top spot after defeating Cagliari 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on November 1, 2026.

How Lazio Climbed to First Place

Cagliari opened the scoring in the twentieth minute through M’Bala Nzola during the Week 10 fixture. Lazio responded when Gustav Isaksen equalized in the thirty-sixth minute. Substitute Andrea Pinamonti then secured the three points for the hosts by heading in a goal in the eighty-third minute, according to Kompas.

The victory pushed Lazio past Inter Milan, who dropped to second place with 25 points after losing to AC Milan at San Siro. Pontianak Post noted that Lazio entered the match on an impressive run, having previously routed Sassuolo 6-2 and remaining undefeated through their first nine matches of the 2026-2027 campaign.

Gattuso Dismisses Table Watching

Despite claiming first place in the standings after ten matches for the first time since the 2010-2011 season, Gattuso urged his players to ignore the league table entirely.

“Kami berada di posisi atas, kami masih butuh 12 poin untuk mencapai target 40 poin yang kami tetapkan di awal musim,” Gennaro Gattuso told DAZN Italia, as cited by detikSport. “Setiap tim di liga seimbang dan terstruktur dengan baik, jadi kami harus terus menjalani pertandingan satu per satu dan melihat di mana kami akan berakhir.”

Gattuso added that keeping tabs on the rankings induces unnecessary mental fatigue, stressing that the squad must focus exclusively on rigorous work and adequate rest between fixtures.

Upcoming Tests Before the Break

Kompas highlighted that Gattuso’s tactical adjustments proved decisive against Cagliari, as the coach utilized five substitutes to inject necessary energy into the lineup after falling behind. The resulting victory marked Lazio’s ninth win from ten total league matches.

Pontianak Post noted that Lazio now prepares to face Napoli in their final league fixture before the November international break. Meanwhile, Cagliari sits in twelfth place with 13 points after suffering four consecutive defeats, marking their worst losing run in the top flight since April.
