Gattuso Explains Italy’s Choice of Smaller Stadium for World Cup Playoff
Italy will play its crucial World Cup 2026 playoff semifinal against Northern Ireland at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo on March 27, 2026, a decision made by national team coach Gennaro Gattuso.
The choice of the 23,500-capacity stadium, home to Atalanta BC, marks a departure from larger, more iconic Italian venues like the Stadio Olimpico and San Siro. Gattuso explained his reasoning, citing concerns that larger stadiums could create a more hostile environment for his team. He fears that supporters of other Serie A clubs present in larger stadiums might turn against the national team following early setbacks.
“I chose the stadium. I want to thank the president [of the Italian Football Federation] and Buffon for letting me choose,” Gattuso said, according to Football Italia. “I believe that when you go to a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 like San Siro, there are fans of teams like Inter and Milan, and they might start jeering the team after a few wrong passes.”
Gattuso hopes the smaller venue will foster a more supportive atmosphere, recalling a positive experience during his first match as Italy’s coach, despite a 0-0 draw at halftime. He aims to create a “hot” atmosphere that will galvanize the team and avoid any disruption. The Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia hosted a UEFA Europa League semi-final match between Atalanta and Olympique de Marseille in 2024, showcasing its ability to host international fixtures.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Gianluigi Buffon, in an unspecified role, reportedly supported Gattuso’s decision, allowing him to select the venue for the critical playoff match. The match is part of the UEFA qualifying path for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
