Gasoline Prices Soar to $26.82 a Gallon in Remote Alaska Village
Gasoline prices in the northwest Alaska village of Shungnak reached $26.82 per gallon on Friday, August 21, 2026, according to local residents and regional officials. The remote community, accessible primarily by air and seasonal river barge, faces severe supply chain disruptions that have driven fuel costs far above the national average of $4.10 per regular unleaded gallon.
Logistical Isolation Drives Rural Fuel Costs
Shungnak sits approximately 280 river miles east of Kotzebue along the Kobuk River, or about 150 miles by air. Because air travel serves as the only reliable, year-round transportation method, freight costs dictate local retail prices. Low water levels on the Kobuk River during late summer and the previous fall disrupted crucial barge traffic, forcing merchants to fly in emergency fuel supplies.
“We had to get gas flown in twice this summer since the barge isn’t able to make it this way because the river water levels are too low,” said Glenda Douglas, who manages the store in Shungnak. Douglas noted that retail pricing surged from $13.99 per gallon to $26.82 following the second airlift.
Without stable surface transport, communities rely entirely on high-cost aviation fuel and air cargo operations.
Impact on Subsistence Living and Regional Households
The price spike arrives directly at the start of the regional hunting season. Residents across the Northwest Arctic Borough depend heavily on a subsistence lifestyle, hunting and fishing for food they use to survive.
“That price is really going to hurt our hunters that pay for gas to hunt,” Douglas stated, highlighting the immediate financial strain on households that must purchase fuel to secure winter provisions.
While the broader United States experiences moderate retail fuel costs, isolated Alaskan villages remain vulnerable to macroeconomic shocks. NANA Regional Corp. offers a subsidized rate for its shareholders, allowing them to purchase gasoline at $21.46 per gallon.
Supply Chain Pressures and Future Outlook
Albie Dallemolle, vice president of economic development and sustainability for NANA Regional Corp., confirmed the $26.82 price point in text messages. Dallemolle cautioned that current pricing reflects an average between expensive air-delivered fuel and older, cheaper barge reserves.
Once communities receive their fall barge deliveries, prices across the region are expected to increase. New barge-delivered fuel, purchased following the Iran War, carries higher wholesale costs. These upcoming shipments will likely keep fuel prices elevated across interior and coastal western Alaska.
Historical data demonstrates that Shungnak frequently records some of the highest fuel costs in Alaska. In 2007, regular unleaded gasoline cost $8.11 per gallon in the village, drawing national attention from outlets such as the Wall Street Journal. By 2022, local prices had climbed to $14.03 per gallon according to Northwest Arctic Borough figures.
