by Priya Shah – Business Editor

A significant gas leak in Plainfield Township prompted road closures, evacuations, and shelter-in-place orders Tuesday morning, but has now been sealed and Plainfield avenue has reopened to traffic.

The incident, located near Plainfield Avenue and 5 Mile Road, disrupted businesses and schools, requiring a coordinated response from the Plainfield Township Fire Department and DTE Energy. While the majority of impacted areas are now safe for re-entry, some businesses remain without gas service and crews are actively working to ensure the safety of all structures in the vicinity.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., firefighters detected a gas line rupture beneath a service drive while contractors were working in the area. Investigators resolute the rupture was caused when the contractors inadvertently struck the line.

The initial response included the closure of Plainfield Avenue and an evacuation order for businesses within a half-mile radius. Northview High School and North Oakview Elementary implemented shelter-in-place protocols as a precautionary measure. Residents were urged to evacuate an area bounded by Plainfield avenue (from Airway Street NE to Northville Drive NE),Sawkaw Drive NE,and the local mall.

As of Tuesday afternoon, evacuated residents and businesses have been cleared to return. Though, the service drive adjacent to Fire Station 3 remains closed. DTE officials are conducting door-to-door checks to verify gas levels within buildings, and residents who detect a gas odor are advised to contact DTE at 800-947-5000.

Fire crews continue to monitor the scene. No injuries were reported consequently of the leak. Businesses on the west side of Plainfield Avenue are currently without gas service while repairs are underway.
