HOUSTON, Texas - Six students from McReynolds Elementary School were hospitalized Wednesday with heat-related illness after a gas leak prompted the school’s evacuation in east Houston, according to the Houston Fire Department. Crews responded to reports of the leak in the 5900 block of Market Street around 10:30 a.m.
The evacuation underscores the potential health risks to students during emergency situations, notably prolonged exposure to heat. While the building was ultimately deemed safe to re-enter by HFD, the incident resulted in six children requiring medical attention at Texas Children’s Hospital. The incident highlights the importance of rapid response protocols and preparedness for schools in areas with gas lines.
SkyEye aerial footage showed maintenance crews working at the site of the leak. HFD estimates students were outside for over an hour while the situation was assessed.
Houston ISD released a statement confirming the evacuation was a precaution and that instruction resumed after approximately 1.5 hours. “The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority,” the district said. ”Our campus was evacuated…and all students will be provided lunch.”
