Gas Leak Evacuates Houston School; Students Hospitalized

HOUSTON, Texas -⁣ Six students from McReynolds⁤ Elementary School were hospitalized⁣ Wednesday with heat-related illness after ‌a gas leak‍ prompted the school’s‌ evacuation in east ⁣Houston, according to the Houston Fire Department. Crews responded ‍to‌ reports of ‍the leak in ​the 5900 block of Market Street around 10:30​ a.m.

The evacuation⁢ underscores ‍the potential health risks to students during emergency situations, notably prolonged exposure to ​heat.While the ‍building was ⁣ultimately deemed safe to re-enter by HFD, the⁤ incident⁢ resulted ‌in⁢ six children requiring medical attention at Texas Children’s Hospital. The incident highlights the importance of rapid response protocols and preparedness for schools in areas​ with gas lines.

SkyEye aerial footage ⁤showed ⁤maintenance crews working at the site of the leak. HFD estimates students​ were outside for over an hour while the situation was assessed.

Houston ⁣ISD released a statement confirming the evacuation was a precaution and that instruction resumed ⁣after approximately 1.5 hours. “The safety of our students and⁢ staff​ remains our highest⁢ priority,” the district ⁢said. ⁣”Our campus was evacuated…and all students will be provided lunch.”
