Gary Residents Face Prolonged Power Outages After Devastating Storm

August 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

More than a week after a powerful storm struck Northwest Indiana, thousands of Gary residents remain without electricity, with utility provider NIPSCO projecting full restoration by August 25, 2026. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton has criticized the utility’s communication, while community organizations and residents mobilize to provide essential food and support services.

The Operational Breakdown in Gary

The storm, which hit the region on August 11, 2026, brought winds near 100 mph, causing widespread infrastructure failure. According to NIPSCO, the event impacted 301,000 electric customers. As of Tuesday morning, company data indicated that while 269,000 customers had regained power, approximately 27,000 residents in Gary remained in the dark. Melody Birmingham, executive vice president of NiSource, described the damage as extensive, noting that crews are not simply performing minor repairs but are effectively rebuilding systems.

Mayor Melton’s Demand for Accountability

Mayor Eddie Melton has expressed significant frustration regarding the flow of information from NIPSCO to his constituents. In an Instagram update, Melton stated that he has been demanding “specific and accurate information” from the utility, arguing that earlier updates provided to the city were inadequate. The mayor’s office, alongside local police and General Services crews, has been managing the recovery effort, which includes clearing debris and distributing emergency supplies.

The situation in Gary has drawn comparisons to the slow recovery efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. During an appearance on the program The Breakfast Club, Mayor Melton advised residents to meticulously document all storm-related damages, save receipts for emergency purchases, and consult with insurance providers regarding coverage for spoiled food and temporary lodging.

Community Resilience Amid Systemic Disinvestment

The current blackout occurs within a context of historical environmental and economic challenges. According to the Pulitzer Center, Gary’s population—which is over 75 percent Black—has long faced disproportionate exposure to industrial pollutants and systemic disinvestment. The physical destruction of the city’s canopy, with historic trees uprooted by the storm’s force, serves as a stark visual marker of the event’s intensity.

In the absence of immediate utility restoration, community members have stepped into the vacuum. Kiki White, owner of the Legendary Cheesesteaks food truck, extended her operating hours and discounted meals to support those affected. Faith-based organizations, such as the Gospel Truth Apostolic Ministry, have also been active in distributing food and water.

The Road to Restoration

As of August 20, 2026, the city remains in a state of recovery, with the Indiana National Guard deployed to assist in the cleanup. NIPSCO has stated that its August 25 restoration target is an estimate subject to change based on the complexities of the remaining repair work.

Mayor Melton remains focused on the city’s broader progress, noting that crime rates in Gary are at their lowest in 60 years. While the storm has served as a significant setback, the city’s leadership continues to emphasize that the focus remains on community recovery and the long-term stabilization of essential public services.
