Gangnam Plastic Surgery Clinics See Revenue Drop As Doctors Pivot

Gangnam Plastic Surgery Clinics See Revenue Drop As Doctors Pivot

November 3, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Plastic surgery clinics in Seoul’s Gangnam district are experiencing a drop in operating numbers and monthly revenue as medical professionals pivot toward non-surgical procedures, according to data from the Small Enterprise and Market Service.

    Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • Plastic surgery clinic numbers in Apgujeong-dong dropped by 4.3% to 88 locations in July compared to the previous year, with average monthly revenue per shop falling 1.3% to 149.8 million won.
  • Dermatology and urology practices in both Apgujeong-dong and Sinsa-dong saw increases in both business numbers and monthly revenue over the same period.
  • Medical tourism data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare shows that foreign patients visiting domestic dermatology clinics reached 1.313 million last year, exceeding plastic surgery patient numbers by more than five times.

Shifting Consumer Demand from Surgery to Non-Invasive Procedures

The contraction in traditional plastic surgery stems from a changing consumer preference for regular skin management over major operations like double eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty. Consumers increasingly opt for minimally invasive procedures such as botulinum toxin injections, fillers, and lifting treatments. This shift is reinforced by a shrinking population of individuals in their twenties alongside a growing demand for skin care among middle-aged and older demographics. Data from the Korea Tourism Organization’s Tourism Data Lab shows that foreign tourist spending on dermatology rose from 53.72% to 55.72% between January and September, while the plastic surgery share dropped from 24.53% to 19.53%.

Doctors Move Away From Scalpels Toward Dermatological Treatments

The financial downturn in surgical practices has driven medical practitioners to alter their clinical focus. Data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, revealed during a parliamentary audit by the National Assembly’s Health and Welfare Committee, shows that 3,319 private clinics in Seoul reported dermatology as their medical department as of late July. Among them, board-certified dermatologists operated just 385 clinics, representing 11.6% of the total. General practitioners and specialists in family medicine and plastic surgery filled the remainder. Plastic surgeons shifting to skin treatments cite profitability and lower operational burdens as primary drivers. Surgical operations require extensive time and personnel support, whereas procedures like laser treatments and filler injections require smaller facilities and fewer staff while securing steady, recurring patient demand.

Lowering Medical Dispute Risks Through Non-Surgical Care

Operating risks and potential medical malpractice claims also influence how physicians select their clinical specialties. Plastic surgeries carry risks of severe complications or high-value damage settlements if an adverse event occurs. Statistics from the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency indicate that last year’s filed mediation and arbitration applications included 175 cases for plastic surgery and 114 cases for dermatology.
