Game Boy Cartridge Authenticator: New App Detects Fakes & Checks Prices
A new smartphone application called Retrace, developed by Epilogue, allows users to verify the authenticity of Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. The app functions in conjunction with the GB Operator, a device that connects to a computer via USB and allows users to play and manage Game Boy cartridges.
The Retrace app, released on March 23, 2026, connects to the GB Operator via USB-C, enabling users to scan cartridges and receive instant feedback on their authenticity, as well as current market pricing. According to Epilogue, the GB Operator functions like a cartridge slot for a computer, allowing for seamless synchronization of save data between console and PC emulation. The device is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.
Epilogue claims the Retrace app boasts 98.7% accuracy in counterfeit detection. The rise in counterfeit cartridges prompted the development of the tool, offering a way for collectors to protect themselves against fraudulent products. The GB Operator also allows users to back up and restore save data, preventing data loss due to aging cartridge batteries, and can even transform a Game Boy Camera into a webcam for streaming in 8-bit style.
The GB Operator is currently available for purchase at $49.99, including VAT, directly from Epilogue and at World Game Express. Epilogue also offers the SN Operator, a similar device for Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Super Famicom cartridges. The Retrace app is available for both iOS (version 17 or later) and Android (version 7 or later) devices through their respective app stores.
Epilogue emphasizes that Retrace is an informational tool and does not guarantee authenticity, advising users to always perform physical inspections and compare circuit boards against reliable sources. The company distributes updates to the Retrace app automatically through the App Store and Google Play.
