Galatasaray & Dortmund Dominate Champions League Play-off First Leg All-Star XI

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Galatasaray’s stunning 5-2 victory over Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off has yielded significant recognition for the Turkish champions, with two of their players named in the all-star team from the opening legs of the ties. The result places Galatasaray in a commanding position ahead of the return leg in Turin on February 25th.

The match at Rams Global Stadium saw a remarkable turnaround from Galatasaray after falling behind to Teun Koopmeiners’ goals for Juventus. Gabriel Sara had initially given the hosts the lead, but Juventus responded swiftly to accept a 2-1 advantage into halftime. However, a dominant second-half performance, fueled by goals from Noa Lang and Davinson Sanchez, shifted the momentum decisively in Galatasaray’s favor.

Further compounding Juventus’s woes, substitute Juan Cabal was sent off with a second yellow card shortly after entering the field, leaving the Serie A side with ten men and a three-goal deficit. Lang added a second goal, and Sacha Boey completed the rout with a late strike, securing a 5-2 win for Okan Buruk’s team.

The victory marks a significant achievement for Galatasaray, who will now travel to Turin with a substantial advantage. The return leg, scheduled for 20:00 GMT on Wednesday, February 25th, will determine which team advances to the next stage of the Champions League. Highlights of the first leg will be available on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app from 22:00 on Wednesday, with a dedicated Match of the Day program airing on BBC One from 22:40 to 00:00.

The Champions League knockout phase play-offs began with Galatasaray’s emphatic win, alongside victories for Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund also taking charge of their respective ties. The competition continues with the second legs, where Juventus will attempt to overcome the three-goal disadvantage and the numerical disadvantage from the first encounter.
