Future Knight: Game & Watch Inspired Run-and-Gun Coming to PC and Consoles Summer 2026

April 9, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Studio Koba and Aeternum Game Studios have announced a partnership to develop Future Knight, a run ‘n gun action shooter scheduled for release on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch in the summer of 2026.

The project, described as an “LCD Neo-Retro” title, is designed to emulate the visual and tactile experience of classic liquid crystal display handheld systems, specifically referencing Nintendo’s Game & Watch series. To achieve this aesthetic, the developers are utilizing bold outlines and pale pre-printed graphics, rendering characters and enemies as shifting ink blots rather than traditional pixels.

Technical Design and Combat Mechanics

Future Knight is structured as a 2D shoot-’em-up that alternates between vertical and horizontal scrolling. The gameplay centers on a synergy-based combat system where players tag-team between two distinct characters: the armored Future Knight and a companion named Two More.

Combat requires players to switch between the two characters on the fly to execute “lethal choreographies.” Future Knight provides the necessary strength for combat, whereas Two More—described as an inexplicably powerful benign tumor with a life of its own—offers agility. This duality influences both combat encounters and the ability to access specific collectibles or routes within the game.

Narrative and World Setting

The game is set in a retro-futuristic version of Tokyo. The plot centers on May 23, 1993, following an event where the Lady of the Past, leader of a pyramid scheme cult known as “Present,” erased the memories of all humanity.

Narrative and World Setting

Players control a robot constructed over 30 years after the apocalypse using the remains of a 1990s soap opera actor. The narrative is characterized by dark humor and social satire, featuring enemies such as sentient piles of poop and bosses that reimagine alarm clocks as Kaiju.

Level Structure

The game features eight distinct biomes, each representing one hour in the schedule of the antagonist. This structure serves as a race against time, tasking the protagonist with stopping the memory wipe exactly eight hours before the apocalypse occurs.

These areas include diverse environments such as dangerous construction sites and deadly sushi conveyor belts, integrating physics-driven set-pieces and various hazards into the run-and-gun progression.

The title is currently available for wishlisting on Steam.
