Fully Subscribed Dominates Grade 1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland
Fully Subscribed Wins the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland
Fully Subscribed seized command on the far turn and pulled away through the stretch on Sunday to capture the $650,000, Grade 1 Spinster Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths at Keeneland. Piloted by Flavien Prat, the 4-year-old filly secured her trainer Chad Brown his second victory of the program in this 1 1/8-mile test. The Spinster serves as a win-and-you’re-in qualifying race for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, scheduled for October 31 over the exact same track and distance. Regaled and Snowyte were scratched, leaving three starters in the field.
Tactical Breakdown of the Three-Horse Field
Under the direction of José Ortiz, 2024 champion 2-year-old filly Immersive launched from the gate to establish the early advantage along the inside rail. The leader set fractions of 24.19 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 48.43 seconds for the half-mile, maintaining cushions of 1 1/2 lengths and a length respectively. Fully Subscribed stalked in second from the three path, while Counting Stars tracked along the inside in third under Irad Ortiz Jr. Counting Stars, the sole 3-year-old in the field, faced older fillies and mares for the first time.
As the frontrunners hit the three-quarters mark in 1:13.00, Flavien Prat drew level with Immersive near the three-furlong marker. Fully Subscribed assumed the lead under a hand ride approaching the five-sixteenths pole before navigating four wide into the stretch. Shifting outward in the upper stretch, she extended her advantage to 3 lengths at the mile marker in 1:37.56 and drew off further with minimal urging. Crossing the finish line in 1:50.60 over the fast main track, Fully Subscribed returned $3.08 to win as place and show wagering were unavailable.

A three-horse field can be kind of a Tom-and-Jerry game,
Prat said. But she jumped well and everything set up good. She was traveling well and gave me a good run. Obviously when I saw Irad coming around, I asked her to get going and she responded well, and after that I was just trying to save some energy.
Mark Casse Will Rest Counting Stars
Counting Stars raced in the four and five tracks on the final turn while pursuing the pace, ultimately failing to pose a serious threat as she finished second, 3 1/4 lengths behind the victor. The trip was great. She ran really good,
Irad Ortiz said. Right away I looked to the side and Flavien was right there so I told myself I’m going to have to go a little fast all the way and with a person outside of us and I don’t want to do that so I went to Plan B. She came right back to me beautifully.
Mark Casse explained that the race strategy depended entirely upon the start, and he will now give Counting Stars a vacation at home rather than aiming her toward the Breeders’ Cup. We talked about two different scenarios,
Casse said. Irad and I, if she broke running, he was going to go. But if not, he’s going to get stuck, because we knew there was no way Flavien was going to let him out. So, you’ll see down the backside, he took her back, so he could get outside Flavien. I’m proud of her, she ran great. We’ll send her home now for a rest and try to win the Breeders’ Cup next year.
Immersive, overtaken near the five-sixteenths marker, crossed the wire 9 1/4 lengths back in third place. Three-horse field was pretty simple,
José Ortiz said. She went to the lead, we set good fractions, I was third best.
Trainer Brad Cox added: I thought she ran well. We got an easy lead. I felt like a somewhat comfortable lead going into the turn. She had to be called upon a little bit but that’s how she normally runs. The winner blew past us at the five-sixteenths pole and we had no response. Third best today.
