Fryeburg Fair Celebrates 175 Years with Early Opening and New Attractions
FRYEBURG, Maine – Maine’s largest fair, the Fryeburg Fair, officially opened its gates Saturday morning, marking the start of its nine-day “Blue ribbon Classic.” This year’s event is notably noteworthy as it represents the 175th annual celebration and a historic change in scheduling: the fairgrounds opened a day earlier than in previous years.
The decision to expand the fair’s run, extending into october 5th, was driven by a desire to maximize public access. “Leaving weekend days unused for all the fairs is not a good idea, I mean that’s when the public can come,” explained Fair President David Hastings.
while the early start has created some logistical challenges – overlapping with the final day of the Cumberland Fair - organizers are focused on delivering a top-tier experience. Hastings acknowledged the shrinking number of traveling carnival operators nationally, emphasizing their importance. “Carnival operators…they are disappearing. It’s vital for a fair to have a good carnival, we’re partners, and we think it’s something that all the fairs in maine need to look at.”
Beyond the expanded schedule, fairgoers can look forward to new attractions, including a spirited keg throwing contest that drew a crowd of competitors eager to test their strength with a 22-pound barrel. customary fair staples remain, with over 3,000 animals on display, alongside a wide array of food, games, and rides.
“What has made Fryeburg Fair such a special fair in my mind is the quality and the people who have spent so many years running different departments,” Hastings said, highlighting the dedication of long-time volunteers. “They all just take care of that themselves, it’s just splendid.”
With a beautiful early fall day setting the stage, the Fryeburg Fair is poised to welcome visitors of all ages for a week and a half of classic New England fun.
