From Addiction and Overdose to UFC Retirement: Court McGee’s Journey of Sobriety
In an essay published by the Deseret News, mixed martial arts fighter Court McGee reflected on his journey from a nearly fatal heroin overdose to a retirement fight at the Delta Center. Ahead of UFC 332, McGee marks 7,472 days of sobriety while preparing for a welterweight bout against Eric Nolan in his home state of Utah.
From Ogden Upbringing to Addiction and Near-Fatal Overdose
Growing up in a supportive home in Ogden, Utah, McGee gravitated toward martial arts and wrestling at a young age, according to the Deseret News. After experiencing separation anxiety as a young child left at an amusement park, a therapist recommended wrestling or karate. He wrestled through high school under USA Wrestling Hall of Famer Mike Hansen at Layton High School.
However, college wrestling opportunities in Utah were scarce when he graduated. Following a clavicle break and an elbow injury from arm wrestling, doctors prescribed OxyContin. Combined with existing struggles with alcohol, the prescription pills triggered a severe downward spiral. Six months after dropping out of college and 18 months after high school graduation, McGee suffered an unintentional, near-fatal heroin overdose. He recalled reaching a low point where he considered seeking prison time simply to achieve a controlled, safe environment to get sober.

Sobriety, Family Life, and the McGee Project
McGee achieved sobriety following drug treatment after his overdose, though a brief relapse occurred after six months of sobriety. Relying on a 12-step program, life examples, and a higher power, he maintained his sobriety, reaching Day 7,472 this week. He reunited with his high school sweetheart, Chelsea, and the couple has three sons named Isaac, Crew, and Nash.
Outside of competition, McGee trains and instructs at Agema Jiu Jitsu in Provo, Utah. In 2015, he established the nonprofit organization called the McGee Project to help young people battling addiction.
Preparing for UFC 332 at the Delta Center
UFC 332 marks the 38th professional MMA fight for the 41-year-old veteran. He holds a 23-14 overall record, including an 11-13 mark inside the UFC, and previously won Season 11 of the reality series “The Ultimate Fighter.” Facing Eric Nolan in a welterweight matchup, McGee brings his competitive career to a close in his home state.
