French Recorded Music Market Grows by 3 Percent in First Half of 2026

The French recorded music market generated 449 million euros during the first half of 2026, marking a 3.5 percent year-on-year increase in overall turnover, according to data published by the Syndicat National de l’Édition Phonographique (SNEP) on September 8. Despite marking a continuation of growth following a ninth year of expansion in 2025, the pace represents the slowest growth rate recorded by the industry in a decade.

Streaming Drives Growth While Physical Formats Slip

Recorded music consumption in France continues to rely heavily on streaming services, which accounted for 360 million euros of the total first-half revenue in 2026. Premium streaming subscriptions specifically pushed the market forward, generating 291 million euros—a 7.5 percent increase that added 20 million euros compared to the same period in 2025. According to figures compiled by Jason Moreau, Executive Editor at MUSICBIZ, premium streaming now represents 65 percent of all music consumption revenue in the country, climbing two percentage points over twelve months.

Platform usage metrics reflect this expansion. Subscribed users generated 65 billion streams during the first half of 2026, representing an increase of 4 billion streams in a single year and 11 billion over a two-year window. Total streams across all platform types reached 81 billion, doubling the volume recorded in 2020. Ad-supported streaming also posted gains, bringing in 40.7 million euros with a 5 percent increase. However, this growth failed to offset a decline in video streaming revenue, which fell 12 percent to 27.9 million euros, marking its second year of contraction.

Physical Format Revenues Diverge Across Media Types

Physical formats experienced a downturn during the opening six months of 2026, dropping to 85 million euros in total revenue after a brief rebound in 2025. Compact discs proved to be the primary driver of this decline, with CD revenues falling 14 percent from 38 million euros down to 32.6 million euros. Conversely, vinyl records continued to draw consumer spending, bringing in 49.3 million euros for a 6 percent year-on-year increase.

Domestic Repertoire Dominates the Charts

Local repertoire remains the bedrock of commercial activity within the French market. Artists signed to French labels accounted for three-quarters of the top 200 best-selling albums during the first half of 2026. Domestic acts claimed 17 of the top 20 positions on the sales charts, underscoring the enduring strength of homegrown talent in shaping consumer demand across both physical and digital formats.
