French Prime minister Sébastien Lecornu is stepping down after less than a month in office, becoming the fifth prime minister in France in under two years. The 39-year-old’s resignation comes amid widespread social unrest fueled by a 5 percent budget deficit - the highest in the european Union – and subsequent austerity plans. President Macron has accepted lecornu’s resignation, according to the Elysée.
Lecornu’s departure follows the dismissal of his predecessor,Bayrou,by parliament over the same austerity measures. Appointed to address France’s political and economic challenges, Lecornu faced immediate scrutiny and lacked broad support from both left- and right-wing opposition parties, stemming from revelations he had misrepresented his academic credentials, falsely claiming a law degree from the University of Paris. The country’s economic crisis and planned cuts have recently sparked meaningful protests across France.
