French Diplomat Under Investigation for Espionage Concerns

February 22, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

In 2020, France’s internal intelligence service, the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Intérieure (DGSI), filed a report with the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning a French diplomat’s “fascination” with an unnamed foreign power, according to sources familiar with the matter. The report triggered a preliminary investigation by the judicial authorities.

The DGSI, one of ten French intelligence services, is responsible for domestic security. According to the Académie du Renseignement, the DGSI’s ability to initiate judicial proceedings – through reports to the prosecutor’s office – is a key component of its operational strength, allowing it to move from threat detection to legal intervention, including arrests and prosecution. The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office is structured around six divisions and sixteen sections, including a dedicated unit for handling organized crime and narcotics, and another focused on cybercrime.

The diplomat in question was not publicly identified at the time, and details of the investigation remain confidential. Sources indicate the concerns centered on potential compromise, though the nature of the diplomat’s alleged activities and the foreign power involved have not been disclosed. The investigation reportedly examined the extent of the diplomat’s contacts and any potential transfer of sensitive information.

The Direction du Renseignement et de la Sécurité de la Défense (DRSD), the intelligence service of the Minister of the Armed Forces, is primarily focused on counter-intelligence within the defense sector. Although the DRSD’s core mission differs from the DGSI’s domestic focus, both agencies contribute to France’s overall intelligence capabilities. The DRSD is currently engaged in active recruitment, seeking to expand its workforce.

The investigation into the diplomat concluded without formal charges being filed, but the incident prompted a review of security protocols within the diplomatic corps. The DGSI continues to monitor individuals with access to sensitive information, and the Paris prosecutor’s office maintains its specialized divisions to address complex national security threats. As of February 22, 2026, no further public statements have been issued regarding the case, and the diplomat remains in their post.
