Fremantle Dominate Melbourne: Dockers Signal 2026 Finals Intentions

March 21, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Fremantle delivered a commanding 48-point victory over Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Saturday, March 21, 2026, signaling their intent for a strong season with a final score of 17.16 (118) to 10.10 (70). The Dockers’ performance was characterized by fast-paced play and a potent attack, leaving the Demons struggling to respond.

The home side established a dominant lead early, kicking seven goals in the first quarter. Andrew Brayshaw, rebounding from a quieter performance in round one, was instrumental in the early surge, accumulating 14 disposals in the opening term. Matt Johnson and Shai Bolton also contributed with long-range goals, helping Fremantle build a 42-point advantage at the first break.

Melbourne attempted a comeback in the second quarter, managing four goals, including a skillful snap from Kysaiah Pickett. Although, Fremantle responded through Sam Switkowski and Josh Treacy, maintaining a 31-point lead at halftime. The Dockers’ ability to quickly counter Melbourne’s momentum proved crucial.

The third quarter saw Fremantle further extend their lead, with a devastating seven-goal term. Josh Treacy continued his strong performance, even as Shai Bolton and Isaiah Dudley proved particularly damaging. Dudley’s late snaps added to the margin, pushing the Dockers’ advantage to 67 points at the final change.

Treacy finished the game with a game-high four goals, while Dudley contributed three. Bolton, playing a key role in the midfield in the absence of Hayden Young, added two goals to his 32 disposals and 10 inside 50s. Brayshaw’s impressive performance included 39 disposals and 10 score involvements.

Despite the significant deficit, Melbourne fought to the finish, led by captain Max Gawn, who recorded 23 disposals and 11 marks, and Christian Salem with 26 disposals and eight rebounds. Jack Steele also battled hard at the contest, collecting a team-high 31 disposals and nine clearances.

Fremantle captain Alex Pearce was managed in the final term after a strong performance, with Luke Ryan taking his place in defense following a late change to the team due to Brandon Walker’s soreness. Melbourne will assess the fitness of defender Daniel Turner, who suffered a hand injury early in the game, potentially putting pressure on Blake Howes and Changkuoth Jiath.

The pre-game interaction between Shai Bolton and Kysaiah Pickett, along with their respective teammates Isaiah Dudley and Latrelle Pickett, highlighted a personal contest within the broader match. While Pickett’s goal in the second quarter was notable, it was Bolton and Dudley who ultimately had a greater impact on the game’s outcome.

The Dockers’ ability to adjust when Caleb Serong was heavily tagged by Koltyn Tholstrup was also a key factor in their victory. Brayshaw’s increased output in the absence of Serong’s usual influence demonstrated Fremantle’s depth and adaptability. The Dockers won the clearances 34-29, and capitalized on turnovers to generate scoring opportunities.

Patrick Voss’s passionate and physical play was a feature of the match, engaging with opponents and celebrating with teammates. His intensity, however, drew attention, including an incident at quarter-time with Harrison Petty.
