Free PS5 Game Available Now: New Release Today

July 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released The Finals—a free-to-play, team-based first-person shooter—to the PlayStation 5 platform, following a broader rollout across PC and console ecosystems. Developed by Embark Studios, the title utilizes a destruction-heavy engine that allows players to alter the environment during competitive matches.

Gameplay Mechanics and Platform Availability

The Finals focuses on high-speed, objective-based combat within virtual game show environments. According to technical specifications provided by the developer, the game emphasizes environmental interactivity, where walls, ceilings, and floors can be demolished to create new sightlines or movement paths.

The game is available for download via the PlayStation Store at no cost, operating on a "games as a service" model. This release allows cross-platform progression and play, enabling users to synchronize account data between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC versions.

Development and Live Service Model

Embark Studios, a team largely composed of former DICE employees, designed the game around the Unreal Engine 5 framework. The studio maintains a seasonal content schedule, which includes the addition of new weapons, gadgets, and cosmetic items intended to sustain player engagement.

While the base software is free, the studio utilizes an in-game currency system to monetize cosmetic items and seasonal "battle passes." These purchases are optional and do not provide mechanical advantages during gameplay.

Technical Requirements and Next Steps

Players accessing the game on PlayStation 5 require a persistent internet connection and an active PlayStation Network account. While the game does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer functionality, users should monitor the official Embark Studios social channels for scheduled maintenance windows or patch deployments.

The developer has stated that further balance updates and map rotations will continue to be implemented as part of the ongoing live-service support for the title.
