Free & Low-Cost Healthcare in Washington State: Clinics & Resources
A free health clinic in the Puget Sound region, Lahai Health, is expanding access to care for uninsured and low-income individuals, offering a comprehensive range of services from primary care to mental health counseling. Founded in 2003 as Puget Sound Christian Clinic, the organization has grown from a small, volunteer-run operation to the largest free clinic of its kind in the area.
Lahai Health provides medical, dental and mental health services, addressing a critical need in King and Snohomish County. According to the organization, approximately 20% of the population lacked access to medical and dental care when it was founded. Services include medical exams, assistance with prescription drug costs, laboratory tests, and referrals to specialists. Specialty care, such as diabetic education, physical therapy, optometry, and gynecology, are available at select locations, alongside quarterly breast cancer screenings.
The clinic’s expansion reflects a broader effort to address healthcare disparities in Washington state. Washington State’s Medicaid program, known as Apple Health, provides coverage for low-income individuals, but gaps in access remain. Project Access Northwest, a regional nonprofit, works to connect low-income and uninsured patients with volunteer specialty care providers and assists with health insurance premiums for those ineligible for Apple Health.
Other organizations are also working to improve access to care. Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho offers preventative care services, including HPV vaccines and cancer screenings, and provides assistance with insurance enrollment. The Prevent Cancer Foundation focuses on cancer prevention and early detection, offering resources for low-cost screenings and community grants. The Seattle/King County Clinic, a volunteer-driven “mega-clinic” held annually at Seattle Center, provides free medical, dental, and vision care to anyone in the region, regardless of insurance or immigration status.
